The little things are what inspire me the most. |
Custom type for Mulberry’s 2011 Autumn and Winter campaign by Craig David. The Campaign is inspired by feathers and launched at New York Fashion Week.
Well, first of all what got me was the way the feathers were integrated with the font. So beautiful!! Feathers is my favorite trend right now…well it’ll probably be my favorite trend even when it is not a trend anymore. The details are gorgeous and in all the right places. The feathers don’t consume the type either which causes better readability. I would like to see this type with less detail, in a more minimalistic way, just to try it out, but other than that, I would love for this to be the type that is used for the book of my life.
Braga, a layered type system designed by Pedro Leal and Dino dos Santos.
“Exuberant baroque typeface, named after a portuguese city, also known as the boroque capital of Portugal. Our latest typographic extravaganza comes with a multitude of fonts designed to work like layers, allowing to insert color, lines, gradients, patterns, baroque, floral swashes, and many other graphic elements. Starting with Braga Base, you can add any of the twenty-three available styles, to create colourful typographic designs. Ask our detailed PDF specimen, showing all the features and how to use this type system designed by Dino dos Santos and Pedro Leal.”
Okay, best type ever!! The fact that you can layer this type to be basically whatever you want is so inventive! I loved the decorative aspect of this type, but after reading about the layer effect, that love turned into a lust! This is the stuff I love about type and design in general. We aren’t in this just to make pretty things, but to invent a whole new way of thinking and doing! This inspires me to push myself. To do better and to think past the picture.
First shirt designed by Zack Davenport
Second shirt designed by Nicholas Gilbert
Third shirt- ??
So, it all started with a shirt. That’s what sparked my decision to want to become a graphic designer! The first shirt I designed was for my church and now that I look back on it, it sucked…but I’ve gotten so much better! That’s the beauty of growth! I love the type on each of these shirts and the compositions. I mostly just love t-shirts. This is what I would love to do with my life. Make t-shirts for the world to wear! T-shirts are wearable art, and I think that’s what I love most about them. I love seeing people wear the things I make, but it can also spread a message. When I make shirts for my church I love the fact that I’m making a design for a cause, and it’s my responsibility as the designer to get that message across in a way that will grab people’s attention.
Fur, experimental typography inspired by organic materials by Enrico Bevere.
“The letters born from the interlacement of thousands of growing branches obtained using some 3d softwares.”
I really wanna do some kind of experimental type now. This is the second group of images I found where people have found different ways to make their own letterforms. Things like this get the gears in my head going! I really love the organic quality of this font also. This material forms a shape that can’t be obtained by purely drawing it. I love things that just fall into place rather than man-making the flow of something.
Bodoni Girl Silkscreen Print by Andreas Xenoulis, Screen Printed by tind
“This is a poster for a typographic project made out of Bodoni letters inspired by the female sensitivity” Bodoni was originally created by Giambattista Bodoni in 1798.
What I like about this poster is that it manipulates each letter to take the form of a girl. Which is really creative. I also like the choice of typeface used. Bodoni has thick to thin lines, which does well for creating this girl. The “G” for the eyes is brilliant, and also the “D” for the lips! It’s just such a genius move. My next favorite part of this poster is that it is silk screen printed. There are so many different ways to print, but I appreciate the time that goes into getting it printed this way. I didn’t even take Beginning Printmaking yet but seeing this poster makes me so excited for what’s to come!!
I love love love love magazines! Especially Elle! Whenever I feel void of inspiration, or if I just want to paint a portrait, I always look in my magazines! They have everything! Layouts, type, compositions, and color! Magazines are like an oasis in the desert for me. I mostly love the photography, and the fashion! But after taking typography I am aware of type and the little details that are put into things. I would die if I could work for Elle one day, but that’s only a dream!
TangaTanga Type by Velckro Artwork
Loved the colors! They instantly pulled me in! All that brightness made my eyes drool! Everything about this font is fun, and I really appreciate that about it, but I also feel that with the right color it could be read a totally different way. I also like that it challenges the letterforms. We can read the letters as what they are, without necessarily having them look normal. This reminds me of UrbanOutfitters, on their website there are always unique fonts, and I can definitely picture TangaTanga on their website!
These are posters done for the Melborne Dance Company (2012) by Josip Kelava.
What really drew me in to these posters are the way the dancers are intertwined with the typeface! I love the movement it expresses! I am also in love with the typeface, which was hand-drawn by Josip himself! Although the typeface is somewhat harsh because of the sharp angles, it still contrast well with the graceful dancer. It makes you think of how dancers have to be very diverse when it comes to dancing. Not everything is graceful! Everything about this poster moves to me, even some of the letters in the typeface look like they are dancing. I like type that challenges me, with unique shapes and angles, it causes me to step out of the norm. The colors are also so beautiful! The pastel blues and pinks are so perfect for this! I’m definitely in love!!

Decided to post my typography project! Cause darn it, I am really proud of this thing! It has come a very long way! The beginning was hell, but in the end I cranked this baby out and I am satisfied! Sure, there may be some things to improve on, but I’m only a beginner and there is no where to go but up……hopefully :)

I LOVE Nana’s cookies! I never eat a whole one in one sitting though….and let me tell you, it is a hard task to save half of that cookie for another...
